Looking for fun things to do in Denver with kids? If you want to plan your weekend adventure or need ideas during school breaks, Denver has so many great family-friendly activities.
As a mom, these are places my own kids love and places we visit again and again. Below are some of the best things to do with kids in Denver, from popular attractions to outdoor adventures and hidden fun activities.

The Denver Zoo is a perfect option when you’re looking for fun things to do in Denver with kids for a full day of fun and adventure. We visit a few times a year, and my kids are always amazed, no matter how many times we go.
There are so many animals to see that you can easily spend the whole day there. Sometimes we explore just one side of the zoo and save the rest for another visit.
Our favorite exhibits include:
Flamingos
Elephants
Penguins
Sea lions
The carousel
This is one of our favorite outdoor activities for kids in Denver.
The Downtown Denver Aquarium is one of our family favorites. My kids love watching the sharks and touching the stingrays. My daughter also gets excited when they have their mermaid shows, which happen a few times a year.
After exploring the aquarium, we usually eat lunch at the restaurant. We try to sit near the entrance so the kids can watch the sharks swim while we eat. It’s a fun experience for kids and adults.
The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is a must-visit for kids of all ages. My kids love exploring the exhibits, especially anything related to dinosaurs, space, and animals.
Their favorite area is the Discovery Zone, where they can:
Play and explore
Search for fossils
Enjoy hands-on water activities
I always bring a change of clothes because they usually get wet. The museum can be busy during the summer, so we try to visit on school days when possible.
The Children’s Museum of Denver is one of the best places for hands-on fun and creativity.
My kids love:
The bubble area
The firetruck exhibit
Building and creating
The outdoor playground
We usually finish our visit outside before heading home, and they always leave happily tired. It’s always a great idea to bring another change of clothes when visiting the museum.
Looking for something things to do with kids in Denver that is free?
A tour at Hammond’s Candy Factory is a great option. You can book a tour and watch how they make lollipops, candy canes, and other sweet treats.
It’s fun, educational, and perfect for the whole family.
The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is open seven days a week and is free to visit.
It’s a great place to enjoy nature and see wildlife like:
Deer
Bison
Birds
Coyotes
You can walk the trails or drive the 11-mile Wildlife Drive auto tour, which kids absolutely love.
The Denver Botanic Gardens is a beautiful place to explore with kids, especially in spring and summer.
Kids usually love the Mordecai Children’s Garden, where they can climb, play, and learn about plants and nature in a fun way. It’s a peaceful spot for parents and a great outdoor activity for kids in Denver.
The Butterfly Pavilion is a short drive from Denver and is a huge hit with my kids.
Children can walk through a tropical indoor rainforest filled with butterflies, learn about insects, and even hold creatures like starfish, spiders, and beetles. It’s a great option for younger kids and for colder days.
For thrill-loving kids, Elitch Gardens is a fun choice. It offers rides for all ages, family attractions, and a water park during the summer months. This is also another great option when you want a full day of excitement in downtown Denver.
Water World, located just north of Denver, is an amazing place to take kids to on hot summer days. They have slides, wave pools, and areas designed for younger kids; it’s perfect for a full day of family fun.
Denver has so many amazing parks, and City Park is one of our favorites.
Families can enjoy:
Large playgrounds
Paddle boating
Open green spaces
Views of downtown Denver
It’s a great free activity for kids and perfect for a relaxed afternoon. You can bring a blanket, have a picnic, and the kids can have fun playing around.
Confluence Park is a fun place for kids to splash in shallow water and watch kayakers float by. It’s a great stop on warm days and is easy to combine with a walk along the river or a nearby picnic. My kids will spend an hour easily just watching the kayakers.
If your kids love trains, Tiny Town is a great place to visit. This little town has a miniature train ride and small buildings designed just for kids. They also host camps and birthday parties. It’s especially great for toddlers and younger children, but it is not open during cold months.
There are so many fun things to do in Denver with kids, whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures, indoor activities, or something free and easy.
If you haven’t visited all of these places yet, consider adding a few to your list this spring or summer. These experiences are perfect for making memories with your kids.
